Tech GOH Announcement, Chris DiBona & Frank Hayes

by admin last modified 2006-08-29 21:54

We have two tech guests this year, Chris DiBona and Frank Hayes! And one of them doubles as a filk guest as well!

Chris DiBona is in charge of Open Source Software for Google. Let me say that again portentiously and with hand-waving: Goooooooooooogle. The biggest and coolest hype factory out there. The company that Microsoft fears. The future Microsoft perhaps? The most potent force on the internet that vows to do no evil. All hail our distributed overlords!

Chris has founded Konstrux Technologies and the game company Damage Studios. He used to work with past Penguicon Guests of Honor Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda and Jeff "Hemos" Bates who run one of the web's biggest websites, Slashdot, and was a Slashdot editor at one time, so he looks forward to seeing them. Chris co-edited an O'Reilly book, Open Sources: Voices from the Open Source Software Revolution, and used to do segments about Linux for the Screensavers show when it was on the former Tech TV. Before editing for Slashdot, Mr. DiBona ran the VA Linux Friends and Family Program. During this time he also testified for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) in a case about whether or not the magazine 2600 should be allowed to link to a Web page that has the DeCSS code that can decrypt DVDs. Chris is on the technical board of Linux International.

We've also got Frank Hayes, a long-time associate of the Dorsai irregulars, who in addition to being a tech columnist for Computer World and Linux.org is one of the most prominent filk musicians. A three-time Pegasus winner and ten-time Pegasus nominee, his songs "Never Set the Cat on Fire", "Cosmos" (which was played for the astronauts during a shuttle mission) and "The Grandfather Clock" have become standards of the genre. Filk will be really big at Penguicon this year!
